Laser Treatment for Gingivitis and Gum Disease

Gingivitis and gum disease are among the most common dental health issues, and although gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, many adults can manage their oral health and preserve their natural smiles despite its presence. Like tooth decay, gingivitis begins when plaque and oral bacteria linger for too long. In the case of gingivitis, oral bacteria maneuver underneath the gums and accumulate on the roots of teeth, leading to gum infection and disease.

If McKinney dentist, Dr. Chen, notices early signs of gingivitis, such as irritated gums or receding gum tissues, then she may recommend a more thorough cleaning procedure known as scaling and root planing. Like a regular cleaning, scaling and root planing (or periodontal cleaning) involves carefully cleaning away plaque and tartar that contain harmful oral bacteria, but from the roots of your teeth rather than their crowns (top portions).

In the Office

During your regular dental checkup, Dr. Chen will carefully inspect your gums for redness, tenderness, bleeding, or recession. These and other common signs of gingivitis can warn that gum disease is imminent, though if treated early enough, the disease may be prevented from developing. If necessary, Dr. Chen will schedule a periodontal cleaning appointment as soon as possible.

Because scaling (cleaning the roots) and root planing (smoothing the roots) are more complex than regular dental cleaning, Dr. Chen will first administer local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. For many patients, scaling and root planing can be completed using a specially-calibrated soft-tissue laser (the same laser used for cosmetic gum contouring). The laser allows Dr. Chen to more accurately and comfortably remove bacteria from underneath your gums so the tissues can heal, preventing or controlling gingivitis or gum disease.

Your scaling and root planing procedure may require more than one visit to complete, with enough time between each visit to allow your gums to heal properly. It is important to maintain a strict hygiene schedule at home in the meantime, and afterwards, to ensure that your condition does not grow worse and require more extensive treatment.
