The McKinney ISD Dental Checklist: What Your Child Needs Before August
Back-to-school lists usually cover backpacks, shoes, forms, and vaccines.
Dental care gets pushed to the side until a child has tooth pain in September.
That is the mistake.
McKinney ISD does not appear to list a routine dental exam as a required enrollment item, while Texas does require proof of certain immunizations for school attendance. McKinney ISD’s 2026–2027 first day of school is August 13, 2026, with back-to-school forms expected in mid-July.
But “not required” does not mean “not important.”

Your Before-August Dental Checklist
1. Schedule the cleaning before the rush
July and early August fill quickly. If your child is due for a cleaning, cavity check, or X-rays, schedule before school starts.
2. Check for silent cavities
Kids can have cavities without pain. Pain often means the problem is already bigger.
Ask the dentist:
- Are there any cavities?
- Are any spots being watched?
- Does anything need treatment before school starts?
3. Update sports mouthguards
If your child plays football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheer, wrestling, or lacrosse, ask about a mouthguard. A boil-and-bite guard is better than nothing, but a custom guard usually fits and protects better.
4. Watch for grinding or jaw tension
Back-to-school stress can show up as headaches, worn teeth, jaw soreness, or nighttime grinding.
5. Handle orthodontic questions early
If your child has crowding, bite issues, delayed tooth eruption, or adult teeth coming in oddly, do not wait until it becomes urgent.
6. Build the school-year routine now
Before August, make sure your child has:
- fluoride toothpaste
- a soft toothbrush or electric brush
- flossers if regular floss is a battle
- a water bottle habit
- fewer sticky snacks
When Treatment Should Not Wait
Do not delay if your child has:
- tooth pain
- swelling
- a broken tooth
- pain when chewing
- bleeding gums
- a loose adult tooth
- a cavity already diagnosed
Small dental problems are easier to fix before homework, practices, absences, and school pictures take over.
Bottom Line
Your child may not need a dental form for McKinney ISD enrollment, but they do need a healthy mouth before August.
If you want to avoid surprise toothaches during the first month of school, the safest move is a summer dental checkup. Illume Dental of McKinney can help families understand what needs treatment now, what can be watched, and what can wait.
