What are TMJ and TMD?

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull. TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder, refers to a group of conditions affecting this joint and the muscles that control jaw movements. The terms are often used interchangeably, although TMD is the actual disorder while TMJ refers to the joint itself.
